Meaning and emotion in music are most directly conveyed through how music expresses feelings. Emotional expression through music captures the affective message—the mood, attitude, and feelings the piece is trying to communicate—so it best represents this area. Cultural transmission, rhythm entrainment, and beat perception each address different facets of music: culture and social context, timing and movement synchronization, and sensing the pulse, respectively. While those processes influence how we experience music, they’re not the primary channel for conveying meaning and emotion the way emotional expression is.
